Updated October 2026 · Based on the 2026 California Notary Public Handbook

The exam in 30 seconds 45 multiple-choice questions (40 scored, 5 unscored), 60 minutes, closed book, pencil and paper. You need a scaled score of 70. Fee: $40 ($20 for a retake). Results arrive in 15 to 20 business days, and a pass is valid for 1 year. You must complete a 6-hour approved course first.

What the exam actually tests

The exam administrator, CPS HR Consulting, publishes how the 40 scored questions are split. This is the most useful fact for planning your study time:

Misconduct and fees15 questions
Notarial acts and documentation12 questions
Administrative procedures5 questions
Identification and subscribing witness4 questions
Immigration and foreign language4 questions

Misconduct and fees alone are more than a third of the exam. That means penalty amounts ($10,000, $2,500, $1,500, $750), maximum fees, and the acts that get a commission revoked. These are pure memorization, and the easiest points to win or lose.

The scaled score, explained

You pass with a scaled score of 70 on a 0 to 100 scale. A scaled score is not a percentage and you cannot work it out from the number of correct answers. Do not plan around "28 out of 40". Plan to know the material well enough to score 80% or more on practice questions.

Five things to know before exam day

  1. Bring a current photo ID (or one issued within the last 5 years) from the accepted list, your completed application with a 2x2 color passport photo, your course Proof of Completion, the $40 check or money order, and sharpened No. 2 pencils.
  2. Register online with CPS HR. Walk-ins are possible only if seats remain: arrive at least 45 minutes early.
  3. Closed book. No notes, no phone, no aids of any kind.
  4. Your pass lasts 1 year, and you must do your Live Scan fingerprints within 1 year of the exam.
  5. After the commission, you have 30 calendar days to file your oath and $15,000 bond with the county clerk. That deadline cannot be extended.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the California notary exam?
45 multiple-choice questions. 40 are scored and 5 are unscored test items that do not count toward your result. You have 60 minutes.
What score do you need to pass the California notary exam?
A scaled score of at least 70. A scaled score is not a percentage, so 70 does not mean 70% of the questions. Aim for 80% or more on practice questions to keep a safe margin.
Is the California notary exam open book?

Yes. New applicants must complete a 6-hour course approved by the Secretary of State and bring the Proof of Completion to the exam. A 3-hour refresher is allowed only for current notaries who renew before their commission expires.
How much does the California notary exam cost?
$40 for the exam and application processing, paid at the exam site by check or money order to the Secretary of State. A retake after a failed exam costs $20.
